Pretty Good Privacy (PGP)
By default, your emails are not encrypted. This is true for most email services today (Gmail, Outlook,...). Some email services (like Proton) have some sort of E2EE encryption, but this is only réally private when both sender and recipient make use of the same service. Most of the time recipient and sender use a different service, so the email might be encrypted in one place while unencrypted in the other.
The best way to make sure that your emails are End-to-End Encrypted (E2EE) is by using Pretty Good Privacy (PGP).
Unfortunately, PGP is currently not natively supported by SOGo Web so to use it you will need to also configure a browser plugin to make it work.
Mailvelope is a browser plugin that adds PGP functionality to SOGo. To set it up follow the steps:
- Download and install the browser plugin for your browser.
- Open the plugin and go to Options > Authorized Domains
- Click Add new entry
- In the fields "Site" and "Domain pattern" enter mail.oblak.be. Click OK to save.
- Now open Key Management in the plugin and click Import to add your existing PGP key.
- Click Add file and select the correct file on your device to import.
- Click Import keys. Repeat this for every public key of your contacts that you need to add.
- Open SOGo Web (https://mail.oblak.be)
- Click the pen icon to start writing a new message.
- In the message body field you will see the Mailvelope icon, click it to create an encrypted email.
- In the Recipient field write the email address of your contact.
- In the Message field write your message. To finish click Encrypt
- The encrypted message will appear in the message body. Click the Send button to send the encrypted email.
